Nelson graduated with a PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of Virginia at the age of 23, a year after receiving his BA there. He began his trading career at Susquehanna Investment Group where he co-founded and ran a proprietary volatility trading desk. Most recently, Nelson was a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank, where he ran a proprietary trading desk with mandates to trade various strategies including volatility arbitrage, equity derivatives, convertible bonds, risk arbitrage, and commodities.
